Over 150 players are set to grace the 2019 Zabasaija Memorial Chess Tournament, which is set to run from Thursday to Sunday at Nob View Hotel in Ntinda.
Emmanuel Mwaka, the chess federation boss, believes this year’s tournament will be a challenging one having included invitations to foreign players.
“We are looking at promoting the game and one of the ways is to always invite foreign players. It’s costly at times but a route we believe brings more to our players this being an open tournament.
We also want to use this tournament to help the teens showcase their skills on the boards,” added the soft spoken boss.
Players will contest at U-10, U-12, U-16, U-19 and other levels at the now fide rated tournament that also helps players earn grand prix points before playing in the round bins.
The tournament will see the top three winners in both Men and Women categories walk away with trophies and cash while all other competitors will also walk away with certificates for recognition.
Gonza Simon is the defending champion of the tournament which was last played in 2013.
The tournament is fully sponsored by the National Council of Sports.
