It was a tight and mouth-watering battle as the national women handball team took on Kenya in the Africa Zone V elimination tournament that will see the winner qualify for the all Africa Games due August in Rabat Morocco.
Coach Jimmy Orotin’s girls took an early 5-0 lead and maintained it till the last five minutes when Kenya fought back and levelled 23-23.
Orotin called for a technical time-out to brief his charges to reduce the pressure and in indeed it worked.
On return Shakira Bako managed four scores while Lilian Achola a point to seal the score 28-24.
The two sides meet again on Monday April 29, 2019 at Mandela National stadium Namboole in a return leg that will see the team with best average score qualify for the All Africa games.
Youngster Lilian Achola was the match maker as she controlled the temple of the game while Goal keeper Amina Ajema and Proscovia Nakiyingi played a bigger role in Uganda’s victory having managed several saves.
Kenya tactician Jack Herbert promised to return on the drawing board and return for bigger win.
“Uganda played well and utilised their chances by scoring which was not the case with us, but we are going to correct our mistakes and come for a win on Monday,” Jack noted.
His Uganda counterpart jimmy Orotin also attributed the fewer score to panic and basic mistakes which he is going to correct ahead of Monday game.
“I think we need to stick to our game plan of a fast game and then execute our opportunities,” Orotin said.
The two teams face-off in the return leg on Monday at Namboole stadium for the decider game.
