Kenya Railway Golf Clubs’ John Legirma won the Tusker Malt Uganda Open Golf Championship in the Amateur category posting a total gross score of 287 (75, 72, 69, 71), one under par off four rounds at Uganda Golf Club’s (UGC) par-72 course in Kitante sweeping silverware.
He won by three strokes after the final round on Friday evening defeating home boys Joseph Kasozi and Christopher Baguma that had dorminated in the first three rounds but fell short for lack of consistency on the final day.
A Jubilant Legirma said, “It’s impressive because it is my first time to play in Uganda and finishing on top was the least of my expectations. My goal was to finish in the top five reason l was so relaxed throughout the tournament”. The lad revealed during a media session at the 18th hole that it was exciting Winning the accolade from another Kenyan saying they will be back in bigger numbers next year.
Kenyan defending champion Daniel Nduva was not available to defend his title won last year at Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort but has been re-claimed by his country man.
Uganda’s day one leader, Joseph Kasozi finished second with a total gross score of 290 (two over par), two strokes ahead of Christopher Baguma who emerged third as Toro Club’s Michael Alunga declined to fourth position with a total gross score of 295, tieing with national amateur team captain Joseph Cwinyai-ai and Gaita Rodell.
The Amateur Open is the oldest event in the Uganda Golf Open Championship, marking its 79th edition this year.The 2020 Uganda Open winds down this Sunday when professionals tee-off for the final round of their event.
