UCU targets volleyball crown

UCU Doves volleyball team opened the National League campaign with 3-0 defeat of defending champions Nemostars.

The victory motivated the University sides in their campaign to claim the league title from the Nemostars this season.

“It was a tight game, but I was confident because we have retained our players but only made changes that strengthen the team,” Coach Nason Bwesigye said.

“We introduced a liberal, Erias Isiagi and that has bridged the gap we had especially in the reception and our target this seaon is to win the league,” He stressed.

UCU and Nemo represented the uganda in the africa men’s club championship in cairo where the former finished 12th anf the latter sixth.

Nemostars Skipper George Aporu is optimistic his boys will make it to the semi-final of the Men’s Africa volleyball Club championship I Cairo on April 7,2019.

Nemo won all their pool D games to top the table which pooled them against Al Ahli sports Club of Libya in the semi-final at 2pm which is 3pm in Uganda.

“We are focused and we are ready for the challenge, but the boys have assured me that it time to write a mark by storming the semi-final,” Aporu said.

Meanwhile Uganda’s second side UCU Doves have also vowed to fight for the ninth position.

The University side that wrote mark by being Uganda first side to win two games on their debut, targets a win against Espoir of Congo today at 1pm which 2pm East African time and also winning their next position fixture.

“Guys we would be in the quarters, but lost focus. Let’s go and win these remaining games to return home ninth, “assistant captain John Mark Okurut told his players in a meeting.

UCU’s Elias ruled out

Uganda Christian Univerity Volleyball team ,UCU Doves will have to look for a key substitute for setter and attaker Elias Isiagi who got a knee injury in their game against El Etihad of Ethiopia on Wednesday April 3,2019.

UCU on Friday April 5,2019 face Egyptian Smouha in their last game of Pool B of the Men’s Africa Volleyball club championship at Al Ahly Arena in Cairo which they must win to qualify to the Quarterfinal.

“It is not going to be an easy one but Johnson Rukundo will be in charge, but we expect him to double his workrate and equal Isiagi,” Coach Nason Bwesigye stated.
